Buon Setsubun! Happy Setsubun!

Mentre mezzo mondo batte i denti dal freddo, oggi, 3 Febbraio, in Giappone si festeggia il Setsubun!
Il Setsubun è la vigilia del Risshun (la primavera) e, come ogni cerimonia di passaggio che si rispetti, prevede dei rituali per allontanare gli spiriti malvagi e per attirare la buona sorte.
Uno di questi si chiama "mamemaki", da tradurre con "lancio dei fagioli", e consiste nel lanciare della soia tostata fuori dalla propria casa o contro un membro della famiglia con indosso la maschera di un demone (Oni), dicendo "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" (Fuori i demoni, dentro la fortuna).
La soia dovrebbe purificare le abitazioni, portando via i demoni e con essi la sfortuna. La consuetudine popolare consiglia di mangiare un numero di soia pari alla propria età o un po' di soia in più per augurarsi buona fortuna.

Le tradizioni cambiano da regione a regione e, mentre nella regione di Fukushima si usa posizionare delle decorazioni a forma di testa di sardina e agrifogli fuori dalla propria abitazione per allontanare i demoni, nel Kansai viene consumato un piatto particolare: l' "Eho-Maki".

L'Eho-Maki, è un makisushi venduto solo in occasione di questa festività ed è un tipico maki arrotolato nell'alga nori con l'aiuto del tappetino di bamboo.

E' un gustoso rotolo di riso per sushi con sette ingredienti all'interno, ma non va tagliato in porzioni, a differenza del semplice makisushi.

Ogni rotolo va mangiato per intero, tagliarlo porterebbe sfortuna!

L'Eho-Maki viene consumato in silenzio, esprimendo un desiderio e rivolgendosi verso una direzione fortunata che varia di anno in anno a seconda del segno zodiacale.

While half the world has its teeth chattering with cold, today, February the 3rd, it's Setsubun in Japan!

The Setsubun is the eve of Risshun (the spring) and, like any other passage ceremony, it expects some rituals to keep evil spirits away and attract good luck

One of these is called "mamemaki", that can be translated with "beans throwing", and consists of throwing toasted soybeans out the door or to a family member who is wearing a mask of a devil (Oni) while saying "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" (Demons out! Luck in!).

Soybeans should purify houses by taking demons away and bad luck with them. The ritual suggests to eat as much soy as your age and/or eat a little more for good luck.

Traditions vary from region to region and, while in Fukushima is used to put decorations of sardine heads and holly leaves outside the house to ward the demons off, in Kansai is consumed a particular dish: the "Eho-Maki", the lucky direction roll.

The Eho-Maki is a makisushi sold in stores during the Setsubun and is a typical maki rolled in nori algae with the help of a bamboo mat.

It's a tasty roll made up of sushi rice with seven ingredients inside, but unlike the makisushi, it cannot be cutted in smaller portions.
Each roll should be eaten whole, cutting it could bring bad luck!
The Eho-Maki must be eaten in silence, while expressing a wish and toward a lucky direction that varies from year to year depending on the current zodiac sign.

Dopo una breve vacanza dalle vacanze ( ma non dallo studio) rieccoci a parlare del Giappone.
Questa settimana ho scoperto delle diavolerie che mi hanno fatto scompisciare dalle risate.
Ormai anche le pietre sanno che il Giappone del XXI secolo è più occidentale dell'ultimo paese occidentale, ma ignoravo che la contaminazione culturale riguardasse anche l'estetica!
Chi di voi, leggendo "Piccole donne" non ricorda Amy? Ossessionata dalla propria bellezza, la giovane fanciulla era certa di poter conquistare un bel nasino all' insù dormendo con una molletta per il bucato che le spremeva le narici.
Le Giapponesi, più di due secoli dopo, credono ancora di poter sfidare Madre Natura...con una molletta!

After a brief holiday from the holidays (but not from the study) here we are again talking about Japan.
This week I have discovered some strange things that have made me die laughing.
By now everyone knows that the twenty-first century Japan is more western than the last Western country, but I did not know that the cultural contamination would also regard the aesthetics!
Those of you, reading "Little Women" does not remember Amy? Obsessed by her beauty, the young girl was sure to be able to gain a nice upwards nose by sleeping with a clothes pin that squeezed her nostrils.
The Japanese girls, more than two centuries later, still believe they can defy Mother Nature... with a clothes pin!

Konnichiwa cibernauti!
Kimono Design è diventato "carbon neutral", ma cosa significa?
Si tratta di un'iniziativa tutta ecologica.
Un blog, o meglio un server, produce anidride carbonica e troppe emissioni di CO2 fanno del male al nostro delicato ecosistema.
L'iniziativa di DoveConviene.it, in collaborazione con iplantatree.org, mira a ridurre l'anidride carbonica prodotta dalle nostre attività in rete... piantando alberi!
Un albero verrà piantato per ogni blog, rendendolo "carbon neutral" per ben 50 anni.
Se avete un blog, perchè non pensate anche voi ad una svolta ecologica?

Inspiration Monday: Ishtar Olivera

Troppa pioggia, più tempo per navigare in internet… ed è così che ho scoperto Ishtar Olivera e il suo mondo. Creativa tuttofare, fotografa, illustratrice e amante dei washi tape, documenta tutto quello che le piace sul suo sito internet, che mi piace immaginare come una stanza con tanti cassetti in cui sbirciare. I suoi tutorial mi hanno già conquistata.

Too much rain, more time to surfing... and in this way I've discovered Ishtar Olivera and her world. Creative factotum, photographer, illustrator and washi tapes lover, she documents everything she loves in her website, which I like imagining as a room with a lot of drawers I can squint at them. Her tutorials have already won my heart.

Questa illustrazione è la mia preferita e trovo sia adattissima a questa giornata piovosa.

Writing Wednesday: Lost in translation

Stasera vorrei scrivere due righe su uno dei miei film preferiti, non a caso ambientato in Giappone: Lost in translation. Se non lo avete mai visto, approfittate di queste serate piovose!
E' un film delicato e avvolgente, per le atmosfere, i toni, gli attori e la fotografia.
Sofia Coppola dirige Bill Murray e Scarlett Johansson, due americani che si ritrovano in un lussuoso albergo di Tokyo. Due anime affini, accomunate dallo stesso senso di straniamento che avvertono nella metropoli nipponica, troppo grande e chiassosa per accogliere i pensieri dei due protagonisti.
La traduzione italiana del titolo originale, con cui la pellicola è stata presentata in Italia, in parte svela la trama, in parte snatura il messaggio del film.
Parlandone troppo credo che rischierei di sminuirne la bellezza, per cui ... buona visione!

Tonight I would like to write a note about one of my favorite movies, not coincidentally set in Japan: Lost in translation. If you've never seen it, take advantage of these rainy evenings!
It's a delicate and enveloping movie, for atmospheres, sounds, actors and photography.
Sofia Coppola directs Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, two Americans who find themselves in a luxury hotel in Tokyo. Two kindred souls, united by the same sense of alienation felt in the Japanese metropolis, too big and noisy to welcome the thoughts of the two protagonists.
Talking about the movie is too risky, I could lessen its beauty, so ... enjoy it!

Treasury Tuesday... gift idea under $15

Da un po' di giorni ragiono su come dare un senso a questo blog e credo che la soluzione migliore sia che diventi una sorta di diario in cui raccogliere tutto quello che mi piace, che siano illustrazioni, blog, personaggi o idee, un po' per fare ordine nella mia testa e un po' per rendere più semplice la navigazione a chi ci viene a trovare!
L'idea è quella di dedicare ogni giorno della settimana ad un tema.

I 've been thinking about how to give a sense to this blog for a few days and I think the best solution for it is to become a sort of diary in which to collect everything I like, such as pictures, blogs, characters or ideas, to make order in my head and make it easier to navigate to anyone who comes to visit!

Viaggiando con la mente in Giappone, molto probabilmente penserete subito alle bellissime geishe e alle maiko, dal trucco impeccabile e dalle acconciature accompagnate da caratteristici ornamenti. Fluttuanti, ricchi e colorati, cosa sono esattamente questi accessori?

Si chiamano Kanzashi e solo una parte, gli Hana Tsumami Kanzashi, sono floreali.

I kanzashi hanno una storia davvero lunga e interessante, scopriamola insieme …

Tremila anni fa, nell’epoca Jomon, erano diffusi dei bastoncini per decorare i capelli e si riteneva che avessero dei potere sovrannaturali, in grado di allontanare gli spiriti maligni. Durante l’epoca Edo (1603-1868) l’acconciatura tradizionale taregami, con capelli lisci e sciolti, venne abbandonata in favore delle pettinatureNihongami, che prevedevano capelli raccolti con il largo uso di ornamenti. I Kanzashi divennero, in questo modo, molto popolari e durante la metà di quest’epoca fecero il loro ingresso i primi Kanzashi floreali.

I Kanzashi possono essere realizzati in molti materiali come legno laccato, metalli preziosi, seta, guscio di tartaruga e, infine, plastica. Molti sono gli stili di Kanzashi, i principali sono: bira bira, kushi, kogai, kanoko dome, ogi, hana tsumami kanzashi.

If you travel with your mind to Japan, you will probably think about geisha and maiko, with their flawless make-up and their hair-styles accompanied with characteristic ornaments. Floating, rich and colourful, what are these accessories exactly?
They are called Kanzashi and just a small portion, the Hana Tsumami Kanzashi, is floral.
Kanzashi have a very long and interesting history, let’s discover it…
Three thousand years ago, during the Jomon period, hair sticks were very widespread and people thought they had supernatural powers in position to keep away bad spirits. During the Edo period (1603-1868) the traditional hair-style called taregami, with sleek and loose hair, were abandoned on behalf of the Nihongami styles, hair up which included the extensive use of ornaments. In this way Kanzashi became very popular and during the half of that period the first floral Kanzashi appeared.
Kanzashi can be created with a lot of materials, such as lacquered wood, precious metals, silk, tortoise-shell and finally plastic. There are several Kanzashi styles, the main ones are: bira bira, kushi, kogai, kanoko dome, ogi, hana tsumami kanzashi.

“Hana” significa fiore, mentre “tsumami” è il termine con il quale si indica la tecnica adoperata nella creazione dei petali.

Gli artigiani giapponesi, infatti, partendo da semplici quadrati di seta, preparano i singoli petali piegando la stoffa con delle pinze. I petali, con l’aiuto di una colla ricavata dal riso, vengono assemblati sui loro supporti per dare vita al fiore.

“Hana” means flower, while “tsumami” is the term that indicates the technique used by the artisans. Japanese craftsmen, in fact, starting from simple silk squares, prepare individual petals by folding the fabric with pliers. These petals, with the help of a rice glue, are assembled on their supports to create the flower.

Pochi sono gli artigiani specializzati nelle tecniche tradizionali e poche persone indossano i kanzashi oggi. I kanzashi vengono usati dalle geishe e in particolare dalle loro giovani apprendiste, le maiko, da chi partecipa alle cerimonie del tè o pratica l’ikebana. Occasioni particolari durante le quali vengono sfoggiati i Kanzashi sono anche i matrimoni, i festeggiamenti per il nuovo anno e il Shichi-go-san, un rito di passaggio per i bambini che compiono l’età di 3, 5 e 7 anni. E’ molto interessante notare come i kanzashi vengono usati a seconda delle stagioni: i fiori di prugno a Febbraio, i fiori di ciliegio in Aprile, gli iris e le wisteria a Maggio o le foglie di acero a Novembre.

There are few skilled artisans in traditional techniques, and today few people wear Kanzashi. Kanzashi are worn by geisha and in particular by their young apprentices, maiko, by those who take part in tea cerimonies and by who practices ikebana.

Kanzashi are used in special occasion like weddings,celebrations for the new year and the Sichi-go-san, a rite of passage for children who turn the age of 3, 5 and 7 years. It is very interesting that Kanzashi are used depending on the seasons: plum blossoms in February, cherry blossoms in April, wisteria and irises in May and maple leaves in November.

Perchè Kimono Design?

Rieccoci...fortunatamente sono stati giorni pieni di cose da fare ed avevamo dimenticato il nostro blog :-(
Lo so che molti stanno brancolando nel buio: chi sono queste due che irrompono su Facebook con anelli e spille? Pensano di fare affari perchè è tempo di regali?
Allora, una cosa alla volta!
Siamo due sorelle di Vallo della Lucania, Anellina e Valentina, che nelle fredde giornate del dicembre 2010, un po' annoiate dalla routine, si imbattono in alcune immagini evocative: stoffe coloratissime, bagliori, fili d'oro e linee nere. Tutte queste suggestioni vengono da un paese lontanissimo, il Giappone, tanto più lontano se si vive in provincia.
L'infatuazione è immediata e trova campo facile nella nostra passione e la nostra manualità.

I know a lot of you are groping: who are these two girls who are bursting in with rings and brooches on Facebook? Are they thinking about doing business because it is gifts time?

Wait, one point at a time!

We are two Italian sisters, Anellina and Valentina, who, bored by the routine, came across some evocative images during the cold winter days of December 2010: colourful fabrics, glares, golden threads and black lines. All these suggestions come from a very far country, Japan, which seems far away if you live in province.

The infatuation is immediate and finds fertile ground in our passion and manual skills.

La rete ci ha magicamente catapultate dall'altra parte del globo e abbiamo scoperto che questa passione ci accomuna ad altre persone che, prima di noi, univano la loro creatività a tecniche e a materiali a noi sconosciuti come la carta chiyogami o il chirimen riccamente decorato. Da qui l'idea di creare qualcosa per noi, visti i prezzi inaccessibili di queste creazioni.

Ecco come nasce il nostro nome: "Kimono" rievoca l'abito tradizionale giapponese, "Design" la nostra idea progettuale, la trasposizione di una grafica antica in chiave moderna.

Oggi è stata una splendida domenica di sole ed ho indossato un ciondolo come questo.

The network has magically catapulted us across the globe and we have found that this passion join us with other people who, before, combined their creativity with techniques and materials unknown to us such as chiyogami paper or richly decorated chirimen. Hence the idea to create something for us, seeing that the prices of these creations are inaccessible.
Here's how our name was born: "Kimono" calls to mind the traditional Japanese dress, "design" is our project idea, translating ancient in a modern way.

Today was a beautiful sunny Sunday and I wore a pendant like this one.
